2017 Lenten Season

“In an acceptable time I heard you,

and on the day of salvation I helped you.

Behold, now is a very acceptable time;

behold, now is the day of salvation.”

(2 Corinthians 6,2)

Lent is an opportunity to be deeply aware of the working of God’s grace in our lives.  Surely, an attitude of penitence can make us more aware of our need for God and our dependence upon God.  But the words above, from the Ash Wednesday scriptures, point to this time as graced rather than a time of penitence.

Someone once suggested that what we “give up” during Lent is really something we want to “give up” for life.  So perhaps this year we can focus on habits we would truly like to grow in our life, things such as generosity, forgiveness, mercy and understanding.
